Lyrics
The Old D&H Canal
We left Honesdale at five in the morn,
With a hundred tons of coal to be borne.
Down from mountains by Gravity Road
On our barge, we packed that heavy load.
On six-foot water we had to float,
Passin’ each lock, each chargin’ toll.
A new drop gate, there was no wait,
Through every one-o-eight.
The mules they, plodded down the path
My daughter, fearful of my wrath
She held ‘em steady, till we was losin’ light
And layed down the campsite for the night.
On the evening of the third day,
In Moses general store in Godeffroy
We waited our turn for Mrs. Casey’s pie
It filled us good and we sang that lulla-by
Then past the Lackawaxen, Delaware, Neversink,
And through Napanoch we went on.
By Rosendale, things were lookin’ bright,
With our mules pullin’ our barge of anthra-cite
We hit the Hudson in less than one week,
Back in my bunk I prayed for some sleep.
And I dreamed one last time for the end,
For bringin’ us back to Honesdale once again
For bringin’ us back to Honesdale once again
For bringin’ our barge to Honesdale once again.
